EMPIRE GOING YOUNGER
League Passes Legislation to Eliminate 20 Year Olds by 2011-2012 Season
The Empire Junior Hockey League passed legislation on Thursday, February 25 to limit the number of 20 year olds a team can roster next season and then eliminate them from the league entirely the following season.
For the 2010-2011 season each team will be limited to two 20 year olds (down from 4 this season) and then, in the 2011-2012 season there will be no twenty year olds in the league.
While less than 10% of the league is made up of 20 year olds the perception has been, to the uninformed, that it as an older league.
The league is making a move to make it more attractive to the premier 14-16 year olds as the league to be in for development and as a feeder to the EJHL and other Jr. A programs while at the same time providing a place for talented 17-19 year olds that are not yet ready for the EJHL.
